Our Services.
At Atkins Speech Pathology, we support adults to communicate confidently, express themselves authentically, and enjoy safe, comfortable eating and drinking. Our team provides evidence-based, person-centred therapy in our Bowral clinic, through community visits across the Southern Highlands and Goulburn. Telehealth is available in some cases.
Communication and Language.
We help adults who experience changes or challenges in speaking, understanding, reading, writing, or social communication. This may include support following a stroke, brain injury, or neurological condition, as well as lifelong communication differences.
Common signs that support may be helpful include:
• Difficulty finding words or being understood
• Slurred, unclear, or effortful speech
• Challenges understanding spoken or written language
• Changes in communication confidence or participation
Voice and Gender-Affirming Communication.
Expert voice therapy is provided for adults experiencing vocal fatigue, hoarseness, or changes in vocal quality.
Specialised gender-affirming voice and communication therapy is also available, supporting transgender and gender-diverse adults to explore and develop a voice and communication style that reflects their identity. This may include work on pitch, resonance, speech patterns, non-verbal communication, and vocal health.
Chronic Cough Support.
A chronic cough — one that lasts for weeks or months — can be frustrating, exhausting, and impact your daily life. Sometimes, coughing continues even after medical causes such as asthma, reflux, or infection have been treated.
Specialised therapy can reduce chronic or habit cough through techniques that calm the throat, improve breathing patterns, and desensitise the cough reflex. Therapy focuses on restoring comfortable, easy breathing and preventing irritation that keeps the cough cycle going.
If you’ve had a persistent cough that hasn’t improved with medical treatment, speech pathology may help you find relief.
Neurodiversity and Disability Support.
A neurodiversity-affirming and disability-inclusive approach is taken, celebrating each person’s strengths and communication style. Support is provided for adults with intellectual, physical, and developmental disabilities to promote independence, confidence, and participation in daily life.
Services may include:
• Supporting communication access and self-advocacy.
• Developing and maintaining speech, language, and literacy skills.
• Implementing and supporting AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), such as communication books, apps, or devices.
• Collaborating with families, support workers, and disability teams to ensure communication is respected and supported across all settings.
Swallowing (Dysphagia) Support – for Adults.
Swallowing difficulties can affect health, safety, and quality of life. Comprehensive assessment and therapy are provided for adults experiencing swallowing challenges.
Signs of swallowing problems include:
• Coughing or choking when eating or drinking
• A feeling of food “sticking” in the throat
• Needing multiple swallows per mouthful
• Wet or gurgly voice after meals
• Unexplained weight loss or chest infections
Therapy includes safe swallowing strategies, tailored exercises, and practical recommendations for mealtime safety and enjoyment, delivered in partnership with clients, families, and healthcare teams.
